About Blueair

Blueair was founded in 1996 in Stockholm, Sweden by Bengt Rittri, with a focus on respiratory health and relief from allergy and asthma symptoms. The company launched its first flagship purifier, the Blueair 401, in 1997, and built its reputation on HEPASilent, a patented dual filtration technology that combines mechanical HEPA media with an electrostatic charging chamber so the unit can move a high volume of air through lower-resistance filter media, cutting both noise and power draw compared to purely mechanical designs. Blueair now sells across more than 60 countries, and in 2016 was acquired by Unilever, which continues to own the brand today.

The product line spans several families built around that core technology: the design-forward Blue and Blue Pure series for bedrooms and living spaces, the DustMagnet line aimed at rooms with heavy dust and pet hair, and the Classic series built for continuous 24/7 filtration. Several Blueair models, including the unit we tested, carry an Energy Star Most Efficient rating, reflecting the low power draw the HEPASilent design is built around.

Why we recognized Blueair

The DIYRated Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose products consistently stand out in our hands-on category reviews. Blueair earned it on the strength of the products below, evaluated the same way every product on this site is: bought, put to work on real jobs, and judged on merit.

Blueair products we rated highly

Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max
Top Pick 2026

Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max

The most energy-efficient purifier in our testing, drawing just 29 watts at maximum speed and 2.8 watts in sleep mode, backed by an Energy Star Most Efficient certification. Its 360-degree intake pulls air from every direction rather than one face, so placement in the room matters less than it does with front-intake designs, and HEPASilent dual filtration keeps particle capture high while airflow resistance, and noise, stays low. At roughly 8 pounds it's also the lightest unit we tested, with a washable fabric pre-filter sleeve available in multiple colors.

What earned Blueair the recognition

  • Built around HEPASilent, a patented dual filtration technology combining mechanical HEPA media with electrostatic charging that lets the purifier move air through lower-resistance filter media than purely mechanical designs.
  • The Blue Pure 311i Max we tested drew just 29 watts at maximum speed and 2.8 watts in sleep mode, carrying an Energy Star Most Efficient certification, the standout efficiency figure in our full roundup.
  • 360-degree air intake pulls contaminated air from every direction rather than a single face, reducing how much placement in the room affects performance.
  • One of the lightest full-size purifiers we tested at roughly 8 pounds, with a washable fabric pre-filter sleeve available in multiple colors.
  • Founded in Stockholm in 1996 with a focus on respiratory health, and now sold in more than 60 countries under Unilever's ownership since 2016.
