How to use this calculator
- Pick how you want to measure. Room size takes length × width × ceiling height and figures the wall area for you (toggle the ceiling on if you're mudding it too, and deduct doors and windows if the openings are big enough to matter). Total sq ft is for when you've already measured the drywall face. Sheet count is the fastest if you know how many 4×8 or 4×12 panels you hung — one 4×8 sheet is 32 square feet of surface to finish.
- Set the finish level — this is the single biggest lever. Level 4 (three coats over joints, fasteners, and beads) is the standard for a flat or eggshell painted wall and the default here. Drop to Level 1–2 for a garage or utility space that just needs joints taped and one coat. Jump to Level 5 (a full skim coat over the whole surface) only for gloss paint or walls under harsh raking light. Each level changes the gallons-per-square-foot the estimate uses.
- Choose your tape. Paper tape is the default and uses the least compound. Fiberglass mesh needs about 8% more mud overall to embed properly through the open weave — the calculator adds that automatically when you pick mesh.
- Add texture if you're spraying one. Orange peel, knockdown, and popcorn are compound sprayed or troweled over the whole surface on top of the finish level, so they add mud on top of the base number. Leave it on "None (smooth)" for a standard painted wall.
- Confirm your container size and waste. The default is the 4.5-gallon "green lid" bucket most pros buy; switch to 3.5-gallon cartons or 1-gallon tubs for small jobs. Waste defaults to 10% — bump it up for a first-timer or a cut-heavy room.
- Read your shopping list. You get gallons of mud, whole buckets to buy, joint tape (feet and rolls), drywall screws, and panel count. Copy it as text, print the branded PDF, or share the link with your exact numbers baked in.
Why this drywall mud calculator is different
After fetching the calculators that currently rank for "drywall mud calculator" and comparing them, one thing stood out: every single one commits to a single coverage number — usually "one gallon covers about 166 square feet" — and stops there. But their own cited sources range anywhere from 50 to 258 square feet per gallon. That five-fold spread isn't sloppiness; it's finish level. Nobody models it.
- Finish-level aware (GA-214 Levels 1–5). This is the only calculator on the page that assigns each rule-of-thumb coverage figure to its correct finish level, so the answer matches the job you're actually doing instead of an average of all of them. A taped-only garage and a skim-coated media room get different numbers, because they use different amounts of mud.
- Three ways to measure. Enter a room's dimensions, a raw square-foot figure, or a sheet count — whichever matches how you measured. DIYers usually know the room; pros usually know the sheet count. Both land in the same math.
- A full buy list, not just gallons. Knowing you need "8.4 gallons" doesn't help at the store — you buy buckets, not gallons. This tool rounds to whole 4.5-, 3.5-, or 1-gallon containers, and pulls in joint tape (feet and rolls), drywall screws, and panel count so the whole order is on one list. Tape type and texture adjust the mud automatically.

How it works (the math)
The core idea is that mud volume is driven by finish level, then adjusted for tape and texture, then bumped for waste:
area = walls + ceiling - openings (or direct sq ft, or sheets x sheet_sqft)
base_mud_gal = (area / 100) x level_gal_per_100 x tape_multiplier
texture_gal = (area / 100) x texture_gal_per_100
mud_gallons = (base_mud_gal + texture_gal) x (1 + waste%)
buckets = ceil(mud_gallons / bucket_size)
tape_lin_ft = area x 0.37 screws = area x ~1 sheets = ceil(area / sheet_sqft) The gallons-per-100-square-feet ladder is the heart of it, anchored so each level lands on the coverage figure the industry attributes to that level:

The ladder is anchored to the Gypsum Association's GA-214 recommended finish levels, cross-checked against ready-mix coverage from distributor estimators and manufacturer spec sheets. Joint tape runs about 0.37 linear feet per square foot (one 500-foot roll per ~1,350 sq ft), screws about one per square foot at standard 12-inch field spacing, and mesh tape gets an 8% mud bump to embed the weave. A fixture file with eight input-to-output pairs runs as a build-time gate, so the published numbers can't silently drift.
Three worked examples
A single 12 × 14 bedroom, walls and ceiling — Level 4
Standard 8-foot ceilings, mudding the ceiling too, paper tape, no texture, 10% waste. Walls are 2 × (12 + 14) × 8 = 416 sq ft, the ceiling adds 168, for 584 sq ft of drywall. At Level 4 that's 5.8 gallons of compound — two 4.5-gallon buckets, plus about 216 feet of tape (one roll), ~584 screws, and 19 sheets of 4×8. One bucket would leave you short mid-second-coat; two is right with a little in reserve.
A 1,000 sq ft basement, knockdown texture — Level 5 with mesh
You've hung 1,000 square feet, you're spraying knockdown, and you want it glass-smooth under the can lights, so it's a Level 5 skim with mesh tape and 15% waste on a big cut-heavy job. That stacks up fast: 26.9 gallons — eight 3.5-gallon cartons. This is exactly the job where a single-coverage-number calculator (166 sq ft/gal → ~6 gallons) would send you back to the store four times. Finish level and texture are doing the work here.
A detached garage, taped only — Level 1
Twenty sheets of 4×8 (640 sq ft), fire-taped so it passes inspection but nothing more, paper tape, 1-gallon tubs. That's just 2.1 gallons — three 1-gallon tubs and about 237 feet of tape. No reason to buy a 4.5-gallon bucket you'll never finish for a job this light; the level picker keeps the estimate honest instead of assuming everyone skims to Level 4.
What affects how much mud you actually use
The calculator gives you a strong, defensible starting number. A real job has variables it can't see:
- Joint density. Smaller sheets and vertical hanging mean more linear feet of seam per square foot of wall — and seams are where the mud goes. Hanging 4×12 sheets horizontally on a long wall uses noticeably less compound than 4×8 sheets stacked. The estimate assumes typical residential joint density.
- How heavy your hand is. A first-timer floats wide, feathered joints and sands a lot of it back off — real waste. A finisher lays tight, thin coats. If this is your first drywall job, bump waste to 15–20%; the mud you sand off the wall and the mud left drying in the pan are both gone.
- Sanding and touch-up passes. Every extra skim to chase a shadow or fill a scratch after primer adds compound the level-based number doesn't include. Level 5 already budgets for the full skim; below that, extra passes are on you.
- Setting-type vs. ready-mix. This tool estimates ready-mix all-purpose compound (the pre-mixed bucket). Hot mud (setting-type powder you mix with water) covers differently and is sold by the bag — use it for deep fills and first coats and the bucket number still holds for your finish coats.
- Corner bead and specialty details. Outside corners, arches, and cathedral transitions all eat extra mud beyond flat-wall seams. Add a little contingency for a detail-heavy room.

Frequently asked questions
How much drywall mud do I need per square foot?
There's no single answer, and that's the whole point — it depends on your finish level. For a standard Level 4 painted wall (three coats over joints, screws, and beads), budget roughly 0.9 gallons of ready-mix compound per 100 square feet of drywall, which works out to about one 4.5-gallon bucket per 500 square feet. A taped-only Level 1 garage uses about a third of that; a full Level 5 skim coat uses nearly double. Enter your finish level above and the calculator applies the right coverage figure automatically.
How much joint compound for a 12x12 room?
A 12×12 room with 8-foot ceilings has about 384 square feet of wall (48 linear feet of wall × 8 feet tall). At a standard Level 4 finish with paper tape, that's roughly 3.8 gallons of compound — one 4.5-gallon bucket with a little to spare, plus about 142 feet of joint tape and ~384 screws. Add the ceiling (another 144 square feet) and you're at about 5.3 gallons, which pushes you to a second bucket. If you're spraying a texture or skimming to Level 5, plan for meaningfully more.
How many buckets of mud do I need for a house?
A typical new 2,000-square-foot house has roughly 8,000–9,000 square feet of drywall surface once you count both sides of interior walls and all the ceilings. At a Level 4 finish, that's on the order of 16–20 gallons per 1,000 square feet of surface — call it 130–180 gallons for the whole house, or roughly 30–40 of the 4.5-gallon buckets. Contractors usually buy setting-type compound in bags for the first coats to save money and drying time and reserve ready-mix buckets for the finish coats. Run your actual square footage through the calculator rather than trusting a whole-house rule of thumb — texture and finish level swing it enormously.
Is one coat of mud enough on drywall?
Only for a Level 1 or Level 2 finish — a garage, a closet, a tile-backer wall, or anywhere that won't get painted and scrutinized. For any wall that gets flat or eggshell paint and lives in normal light, you need a minimum of three coats (Level 4): a bedding coat that embeds the tape, a fill coat, and a finish coat, each sanded. Trying to do it in one pass leaves visible seams, screw dimples, and tape ridges that telegraph straight through paint. Pick your finish level honestly in the calculator and it accounts for the number of coats that level implies.
