How to use this calculator

  1. Pick your roof type first. Gable (the classic two-slope A-frame) is the default and the simplest to estimate. Hip slopes on all four sides. Shed is a single slope. Complex / cut-up covers dormers, valleys, and multiple wings. Flat / low-slope is anything under 2/12. Your choice sets a sensible default waste percentage — 10% for a simple gable, 12% for a hip, 15% for a cut-up roof — which you can override.
  2. Enter the roof's footprint. That's the length and width of the area the roof covers on the ground, measured in feet — including the overhang, not just the wall-to-wall dimension. For a simple rectangular house, that's the outside dimensions plus about a foot of eave overhang on each side. The calculator multiplies footprint by a pitch factor to get the true sloped area.
  3. Set the pitch. Pitch is the rise per 12″ of horizontal run. A 4/12 roof rises 4″ for every 12″ across — typical for ranch homes and porches. 6/12 is the most common residential pitch. 8/12 and steeper are walkable only with roof jacks and fall protection. Steeper pitch means more surface area for the same footprint, which the calculator handles automatically.
  4. Add a section for each plane on a complex roof. A real roof is rarely one rectangle — it's a main gable plus a garage plus a porch. How it works (the math behind the numbers)

Roof area is footprint times a slope multiplier — the Pythagorean pitch-correction factor. It's the same math Calculator.net's slope table uses and that Omni's roofing calculator expresses as area = base ÷ cos(pitch):

The slope multiplier is exact against the calculator.net correction table: 4/12 → 1.054, 6/12 → 1.118, 8/12 → 1.202, 9/12 → 1.250, 12/12 → 1.414. A roofing square is 100 square feet — so a 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares — which is how shingles, underlayment, and labor are all quoted. The fixture file with seven worked input → output pairs runs as a build-time gate, so the numbers on this page can never drift from the embedded copy.

Three real-world examples

40 × 30 ranch, 6/12 gable

A 40 ft × 30 ft footprint (including overhang) at a 6/12 pitch returns a slope multiplier of 1.118, so 1,342 sq ft of roof — 13.4 squares. With the default 10% waste that's 1,476 sq ft to order: 45 shingle bundles, 2 rolls of synthetic underlayment, about 34 lbs of roofing nails, and 140 ft of drip edge (14 pieces). A one-weekend tear-off-and-reshingle for two people who own a good cordless drill for the fascia and drip-edge work.

45 × 35 hip, 9/12

Bump to a 45 × 35 hip roof at a steeper 9/12 (multiplier 1.25) and you're at 1,969 sq ft — 19.7 squares. Hips waste more shingle on the diagonal cuts, so the 12% default pushes the order to 2,205 sq ft: 67 bundles, 3 underlayment rolls, ~51 lbs of nails, and 160 ft of drip edge. At 9/12 this is a roof-jacks-and-harness job — plan fall protection and measure your hip and ridge cap separately.

Cut-up roof: 40 × 28 main (8/12) plus a 12 × 10 porch (4/12)

Add two sections — a 40 × 28 main at 8/12 and a 12 × 10 porch at 4/12 — and the tool totals 1,473 sq ft (14.7 squares), which at 10% waste is 1,620 sq ft to order: 49 bundles, 2 underlayment rolls, ~38 lbs of nails, and 180 ft of drip edge. This is the case every single-rectangle calculator gets wrong — the porch is a different pitch, so its area factor is different, and only a per-section total is right. Cutting the porch sheathing to fit is easy with a circular saw and a pair of grippy work gloves.

What changes how much material you actually need

The calculator gives you a strong starting point, but a real roof has variables it can't see from a footprint:

  • Ridge cap and starter course. These run the ridges, hips, and eaves and aren't derived from footprint alone — measure the linear feet of ridge and eave and add roughly one cap bundle per 35 ft of ridge, plus a bundle of starter per 100 ft of eave.
  • Valleys and dormers. Every valley and dormer is extra cut waste and extra flashing. That's why the complex / cut-up preset defaults to 15% — a heavily cut-up roof can run 18–20%. Add valley flashing and step flashing to your list separately.
  • Penetrations. Each plumbing vent, chimney, and skylight needs its own boot or flashing kit and takes a little off the field. Add one pipe boot per vent.
  • Nail count and wind zone. The 320-nails-per-square default is the standard 4-nail pattern. High-wind and coastal zones require a 6-nail pattern — bump nails by 50% and check your local code annex.
  • Deck condition. If you're tearing off and find rot, budget for replacement sheathing — a re-deck adds plywood, and cutting it clean is where a good circular saw earns its keep.
  • Measure twice. A roof that reads 40 × 30 on paper is rarely exactly that on the ground. The waste percentage isn't padding — it's the difference between finishing Sunday and a Monday-morning supply run.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the square footage of a roof?

Measure the footprint the roof covers (length × width in feet, including overhang), then multiply by the pitch multiplier — sqrt(1 + (rise/12)²). A 40 × 30 footprint at 6/12 is 1,200 sq ft of footprint × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft of actual roof. For a cut-up roof, do this for each plane and add them up. The calculator above does the multiplier and the summing for you.

How many squares is a 2,000 sq ft roof?

A roofing square is 100 square feet, so a 2,000 sq ft roof is exactly 20 squares. That's the unit shingles, underlayment, and labor are all quoted in — three bundles of shingles cover one square, so a 20-square roof needs about 60 bundles before waste. Note that "2,000 sq ft" here means the actual sloped roof area, not the house's living-space square footage, which is smaller because it doesn't include pitch or overhang.

Why is my roof bigger than my house's square footage?

Two reasons: pitch and overhang. A pitched roof has more surface than the flat footprint beneath it — a 6/12 roof is about 12% bigger, a 12/12 roof is 41% bigger. And the roof extends past the walls at the eaves and rakes. So a 1,500 sq ft house commonly has an 1,800–2,000 sq ft roof once you account for both.

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Three bundles cover one roofing square (100 sq ft) for both 3-tab and most architectural shingles. Take your roof area, divide by 100 for squares, add waste (10% simple, 15% cut-up), then multiply by three and round up. The calculator does this automatically — and remember to buy ridge cap and starter shingles on top of the field bundles.
