About Superior Pump
Superior Pump is the trading name of Michel Sales Inc., founded in 1999 by Chip Michel and based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The company is now led by his son, Charlie Michel III, who continues as CEO and minority shareholder, carrying forward a family pump-industry background that goes back more than a century. In December 2020, an Italian water pump manufacturer, Pedrollo Group, acquired majority ownership of Superior Pump. Pedrollo, founded in 1974, is a family-owned company recognized globally in hydraulic pump technology, and the deal was framed on both sides as pairing Superior's established North American footprint with Pedrollo's broader product range rather than absorbing the brand.
Superior Pump's current lineup covers utility, sump, sewage, and effluent pumps built for home, job site, and general dewatering work, along with float switches, hose kits, and alarm accessories sold alongside them. Our own sump pump testing put two of their pumps through review: the 91250 utility pump, which carries the largest review base of any pump we tested, and the 92551 pedestal pump, which we found holds up especially well in narrow or debris-prone sump pits where the motor needs to stay out of the water.

Superior Pump 92551 Cast Iron Pedestal Pump (1/2 HP)
Puts the motor on a column above the pit instead of submerged, so it stays dry, runs cooler, and can be serviced without pulling the whole unit out of the sump. In our testing that above-water placement is exactly why pedestal pumps like this one routinely outlast a submersible in narrow, shallow, or debris-prone pits. The cast-iron and stainless build pairs with an adjustable metal float rod, and it ran quieter than we expected given the exposed motor. The tradeoffs are an exposed motor column that can be a knock-and-trip hazard under a low pit lid, weaker raw flow than a comparable submersible, and a float rod that needs an occasional adjustment check.
